A subgrid lets you split a main electrical connection into smaller, structured parts, for example across multiple buildings or companies, while still keeping metering and capacities separate where needed.
What is a subgrid?
A subgrid is a logical subdivision of a main electrical connection.
You can use it to:
Distribute one main grid connection across multiple endpoints (buildings, units, or companies)
Keep metering and energy data separate per endpoint
Maintain an organised structure of where energy is consumed and produced
In practice, this means you start from one main connection and then branch it into multiple sub-connections, each represented by a subgrid.
Example: Subgrid in a holiday park or multi-building site
A typical use case is a holiday park or multi-building complex, where:
There is one shared main connection for the entire site
Each building or unit has its own physical meter
You want to manage and monitor each building’s usage separately
By configuring a subgrid per building (or per group of buildings):
The main connection is logically divided into smaller grid sections
Each section can have its own metering setup
You still keep everything under a single, structured grid hierarchy
This setup makes it easier to see where energy is going, allocate costs, and manage capacity per building.
Subgrid in an EnergyHub
In an EnergyHub environment, a subgrid is especially useful for separating multiple companies that share the same site or infrastructure.
With subgrids in an EnergyHub:
Multiple companies can:
Connect to the same virtual purchasing station
Share the overarching infrastructure and purchasing logic
While still having:
Their own consumption profiles
Their own production assets (e.g. PV, batteries)
Clear separation of responsibilities and data
In other words, the subgrid lets you logically split one EnergyHub into multiple company-level grids, each with its own capacities, while still benefiting from a shared setup.
Availability and requirements
Important: The subgrid asset can only be used in:
A smart grid environment, or
An EnergyHub environment
If your setup does not use a smart grid or EnergyHub, the subgrid asset is not available.
